Valentine's Day -- This is the time to plant bare-root roses. Bare-root roses also make a pretty nice Valentine's gift for that someone special who's into gardening.
President's Day -- Take this government holiday to prune your roses. It's late enough to avoid deep freezes and early enought to ensure early blooms.
St. Patrick's Day -- Start feeding your lawn today. Green it up on a green day. Also, start setting out plants like geraniums and fuchsias that you have weathered over the winter during the daylight hours.
Tax Due Day (April 15th) -- This is the time to start planting dahlia tubers.
Mother's Day -- This is the time to start putting warm season vegetables into the ground like tomatoes. Much before this and they won't grow because the ground and the night air is too cold.
Fourth of July -- Time to start cutting back sedums, asters and chrysanthemums. This should produce stand-up flowers right into fall.
Halloween -- Begin to take the last of tender plants like geraniums, fuchsias and tropicals into protection.
Thanksgiving Weekend -- Mulch away that turkey dinner. This is the time to mulch your garden to protect seed plants from the coming winter freezes. |
